2012 Review : The winner was having his first start since being gelded and was on a handy mark as he had been dropped 6lb from his last run in 2011. He was quickly away from his low draw and crossed over to take position in the front rank before taking over a furlong and a half out, keeping on strongly to win by half a length.

Trainers Comments :
Duke of Firenze - Sir Michael Stoute
"He seems to be OK over five furlongs. A few things went wrong at York. He bumped his head then Ryan lost an iron. We wouldn't be frightened to step back up to six, but it's an interesting race. He came out of York OK so we'll have another go - with sprinters you can go from race to race. We haven't discounted six but as he's in, we may as well have a go."

Ajjaadd - Ted Powell
"It was a brilliant run last time and I wasn't really expecting it. The horse is fit and well and anything can happen in the Dash. You have just got to have faith. I'm happy with the draw (stall nine). I don't think you want to be too tight against the rails on Derby day with all the crowds, even if the ground is slightly better. We've won on soft before so the ground is not a worry and although we've lost Willy Twiston-Davies and his claim, I'm happy enough to have Kieran O'Neill on the horse as he knows him well."

Humidor - George Baker
"We're looking forward to it and I think he has got a pretty reasonable draw. The horse is in good form at home and deserves to win one of these big races after running so well in Group company. I think we are on the right side of the track and I couldn't be happier with the horse. He is taking a slight dip in company as he's running in a £100,000 handicap rather than taking on 115-rated runners in a Group Three. He's at the top end of the handicap but there's nothing in there that you would be running away from."

Captain Dunne - Tim Palin
"He kind of lost his way a bit last season but we found he had a breathing problem, we had it operated on and he seems to be back on form now. That problem means he's actually fairly well handicapped for this as he's on 95 when he won off 105 two years ago. We were delighted with his run at Chester and we would be quietly confident here. His draw in 18 looks ideal as David (Allan, jockey) will be able to break and get over to the rail and then it should be typical catch-me-if-you-can style from Captain Dunne. He will be able to handle the ground and everything seems to play to his strengths here. There's plenty of others in there, Sir Michael Stoute's horse and Smoothtalkinrascal, amongst others, but it would be great if we could get a one-two."

Up a bit, down a bit - 30th May

Hoofalong began last week by winning the Class4 Handicap at Windsor on Monday by a nose from Riskit Fora Biskit with 2 lengths back to Smart Spender in third. The winner now heads for the 3yo handicap at York (formerly Reg Griffin) with his assistant trainer commenting he is better over 6f with give. The second is all speed and nearly prevailed and in doing so she recorded a good speed figure. The winner has been raised 5lb to 82, the second 6lb to 91 and the third 2lb to 82.

There wasnt a great deal on midweek to report about with Lucky Numbers winning as you would expect on the softer going at Catterick.

At Chester on Saturday Summerinthecity beat Intransigent in the Class 3 Handicap over 6f by 2 lengths with a further 2 lengths back to the well handicapped Gatepost in third. The winner has gone up 6lb to 91 and may struggle to win again as he had lost his last 15 races. Intransigent stays on the same mark of 92, whilst the third drops another pound to 87 and looks sure to come good sooner or later.

At Haydock it was Temple Stakes day and the race didnt go to plan for Sole Power whose jockey chose to track the leaders on the stand side until he had no option but to go on to take up the lead. Normally Sole Power is delivered late on and on this occasion his bid to win not suprisingly flattened out and he wasnt able to sustain his effort for long and he was overtaken. The winner was his scalp at Newmarket Kingsgate Native who had shown there that he was back to his best. At Haydock, one of his favourite tracks, it was difficult to understand his starting price of 14/1 a point that wouldnt bother his trainer Robert Cowell who added to his sprinting CV. Kingsgate Native managed to prevail by a neck from Swiss Spirit who had a bit of a nightmare passage and did well to end up where he did and John Gosden may have hopes of a Group 1 winner to come in the sprint division. Reckless Abandon was coming into this against his elders and Clive Cox's charge didnt dissapoint on his first start of the season and they must have every hope that he can also claim another Group win. Back against a bigger field of runners you could see Sole Power running better than this if Murtagh is back in the saddle.

Finally Ed De Giles's Kingsgate Choice got reward for his string of good runs by beating York Glory by half a length at York over 5f, he also did it from stall 2 which on recent results was a good effort and his 4lb rise should keep him in the mix for furture races. York Glory has been raised 2lb to 100 and Lady Gibraltar in third 1lb to 87. Barnet Fair in 6th was finishing fast and late, as is his want, and he may be about to strike.

Feel the Power !

Sole Power (0) is definitely the form horse for the Temple Stakes tomorrow and the only one capable of throwing down any opposition looks to be Kingsgate Native (1st 14/1) and it may be the same 1st and 2nd as at Newmarket. The going looks to be right and a fast pace should be on the cards with Ballista which are the key ingredients to a good run by Sole Power and this has been his target having previously won and finished 2nd in the last two years.
Not sure what to make of Reckless Abandon's chances however come 3.51 tomorrow we will know if he is a serious sprinter to follow or he's just another number.

Over at York York Glory (2nd) could be ideally berthed in stall 16 and he must have place prospects at 10/1, whilst Mississippi (NR) should give you are a run for your money in the 4.55 at Haydock.

Up a bit, down a bit

It was York last week and on Wednesday Mass Rally won the Class 2 Handicap over 6f by half a length from Nocturn with a further one and a quarter lengths back to Prodigality back in third and York Glory in fourth. The winner has been raised 5lb to 104, the second 2lb to 93 and the third and fourth remain on 100 and 98 respectively. Michael Dods had equipped the winner with a hood and blinkers and it seemed to work the trick and he reportedly now goes for the Wokingham. Out the back in last Singeur has been dropped 2lb to 90 and he may improve for a switch back to 5f with all 7 wins coming over that distance on better ground.

The Goup 2 Duke of York Stakes is best left to Stewart Copeland on the BHA Handicappers blog and his piece is featured below :

SOCIETY ROCKS THE KNAVESMIRE
Plenty of runners and plenty of quality was the order of the day in this year’s renewal of the Group 2 Clipper Logistics Duke of York Stakes, the first major turf sprint over six furlongs of the season on these shores. The weather was unseasonably cold and wet, with a strong headwind as well, which meant conditions were tough for all at the Knavesmire, both equine and human, writes Stewart Copeland.
A total of 17 went to post, and at least seven of the field had already shown a level of form good enough to win an average renewal. It was one of those, Society Rock, who triumphed on the day, which made up for a somewhat unlucky defeat in the race last year.
Society Rock’s rating of 117 meant he was the joint highest rated British sprinter in last year’s World Thoroughbred Rankings and with his victory here, he showed himself as good as ever. Carrying a 5lb penalty for his success in the 6f Group 1 Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock last September, he got the better of a stirring finish with Lethal Force to prevail by a head. This meant Society Rock comes out a 6lb better horse than the runner-up, who’s rated 111 on the strength of his success in the 7f Group 2 Betfred Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last year. A rather neat fit you could say, and Society Rock’s winning performance was as good as a performance we’ve seen in this race over the past decade.
Back in third place a further one and a quarter lengths behind was the Irish-trained Gordon Lord Byron. The highest rated in the field at 118 based on his win in the 7f Group 1 Foret Stakes at last year’s Arc meeting, which also meant he had to shoulder a Group 1 penalty as well. I have him running to 113 and he emerges with plenty of credit as his low draw seemed a disadvantage, given he raced away from the main pace down the centre of the track, which the first two tracked.
Arguably the unlucky horse of the race though was Hawkeyethenoo. Travelling strongly just off the pace, he looked set to throw down a possible winning challenge when denied a clear run over a furlong out. Once in the clear inside the last he finished strongly to finish a further nose back in fourth. With an uninterrupted passage he would have surely gone close. Currently rated 112, I have him running to 108 but given the trouble he encountered I’ve left his rating unchanged.
The above may all renew rivalry in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot next month, with Society Rock trying to repeat his success of 2011, and regain the crown he relinquished to the wonderful mare Black Caviar last year. With another likely strong overseas challenge as well this year, it promises to be a fascinating affair.

At York on Thursday Ancient Cross won the Class 2 Handicap by a diminishing neck from the unlucky Goldream in second with 3/4 of a length back to Judge'N Jury in third. The winner has been raised 3lb to 95, whilst the second has been put up 4lb to 94, the handicapper stating who he thought was the winner. Not sure what Jim Crowley was doing on Goldream he positioned him behind a wall of horses hoping a gap would appear, but it didnt and he was then forced to make his run round the outside of the bunch.

On Friday at Newbury Ninjago failed to run to the same level of form of his last run and consequently finished third behind Zanetto and City Girl in the 3yo Listed race over 6f. The winner won by 3 1/4 lengths and his trainer confessed afterwards that he didnt have his charge at his best the time before and he is now being aimed at both the Diamond Jubilee and July Cup. The second City Girl was coming back from a long break and therefore did well to separate two top horses.

On Saturday also at Newbury Hallelujah returned to form under Hayley Turner and won the Class 2 Handicap over 6f by a nose from the consistent Poole Harbour with Seeking Music back in third. The second had already finished 2nd to Nocturn and 3rd to Hamza this season whilst the third finished in front of Klynch first time out and he has won twice since so the form looks good. The winner was recording her fourth win in seven starts so is open to improvement and her trainer is now aiming her at Listed,Group races. The second has been raised 5lb to 95 and the third remains on the same mark of 93.

Over at Newmarket Hasopop won the Class 2 Coral Sprint Trophy for 3yo over 6f by a neck from Hughie Morrison's Jubilante with 3/4 of a length back to Chilworth Icon in third. Hasopop had finished 3rd to Ninjago at Newbury last time out when Zanetto was 4th and he has now been raised 5lb to a mark of 105, with the 2nd also up 5lb to 84 and the 3rd up 1lb to 101.

At Thirsk Towbee won the Class 4 Handicap over 5f by a neck from Whozthecat with Waseem Faris in third. The winner goes up 4lb to 81, the 2nd 3lb to 86 and the 4rd 1lb to 78. The following Class 3 Handicap over 6f went the way of Klynch who had finished 3rd to Seeking Magic(Crew Cut in 2nd then finished 3rd to Yeeoow) and 4th to Stoute's Enrol before winning his previous race at Ripon off 81 and then this off 87. As a result of this win he has now been raised another 5lb to 92 in beating Fast Shot by a neck with Asphan Sam 2 1/4 lengths back in third and Rusty Rocket in fourth. Finally Steps won the Class 2 Handicap over 5f by 1 1/4 lengths from Bosun Breeze with Noble Storm in third. The winner has gone up 6lb to 95, the second 2lb to 85 and the third goes down 1lb to 96. Kyleakin Lass, 2nd to Stoute's Duke Of Firenze previously, ran below form in 5th and remains on 96.

York Day Two

A good 10/1 win for the blog today to continue the winning streak !

Both sprint races were won by horses coming from stall 18 today. Although both were held up, you couldn't say that either used the draw to win and I think that was more down to coincidence than anything else.

Society Rock's time was only 1.04 seconds outside standard so the rain didn't have as much influence on the going as most people may have thought.

Onto tomorrow and in the 3.50 Richard Fahey's Polski Max has shown improved form over his last few runs and his latest effort was a good performance on speed figures it would seem. The second and third reoppose and this time they will all be on the same weight, albeit Smoothtalkinrascal will have the benefit of the excellent Daniel Tudhope.
However Polski Max's trainer doesn't seem so confident about his chances commenting "It would help Polski Max if the ground turned up heavy. I just worry that five furlongs at York would be sharp enough for him but he's started the season very well". Well it's highly unlikely to turn up heavy as there doesnt look like being much rain about now. He performed well enough on Good to Soft at Pontefract, however that was over 6f and Pontefract is also a stiff track.
With all that in mind I would be inclined to go for Smootalkinrascal (1st) at 9/2 on this occasion although I'm not as confident about a win as I was about Society Rock.

The first race at York , the Class 2 5f Handicap looks very open and Cheworee, Bedloe's Island, Kingsgate Choice and Goldream  look the ones to be concentrating on to me and Silvestre De Sousa looks an interesting jockey booking for the O'Meara stable - Bedloe's Island.
Stone Of Folca is the obvious leader in stall 11 and may even hold out as he won the dash at Epsom.....so it may pay to be drawn close to him and last time out winner Bedloe's Island (14) and Goldream (15) (2nd),  trained by the up and coming sprint expert Robert Cowell, could be the ones to watch out for with the latter at an ew price of 16/1.

I will be away from Friday morning until Monday so don't expect any reviews over the weekend. On Friday look out for Ninjago (3rd) at Newbury and on Saturday Mississippi (0) and Kyleakin Lass (0) both run at Thirsk.

Tuesday 14 May 2013

Duke of York

Society Rock seems to have all the ingredients to run a big race tomorrow, Group 1 winning form, a good draw and a jockey who is at the top of his game.
The jockey writes in his column for the Weekender: "This horse has to be up for top sprint honours again following his success in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint last year. He is a very versatile horse who was unlucky not to win first time out in this race 12 months ago, but for being stopped when making his move. James’ horses are running better now which is a good sign and if we get the rub of the green mine is the one to beat. Form and statistics both suggest I am right. In the last eight years only one winner has been younger than five, and these two are four. Add to that the desperate record of the fairer sex in this contest and my fellow is the pick. On the pick of form my lad stands out as he is a dual Group 1 winner on soft and firm ground."
Tickled Pink is the new sprinter on the block and Maarek probably prefers easier going so 8/1 for Society Rock is therefore a cracking price and it should be taken asap.

The 2.15 looks to be between York Glory, Mississippi and El Viento with Ryan's York Glory looking the best drawn in 11. He came back to turf form in good fashion last time out at Pontefract and he wont have things so difficult this time from a 4lb higher mark and 7/1 is a fair price.

Sunday 12 May 2013

L'invasion française !

The 3.40 at Longchamp today looks like a sprint in the UK and Ireland with 7 of the 10 runners coming from these shores.

With the going being Good to Soft the fav Maarek looks to be the obvious choice having won over 5f last time out and he predominantly has form on soft going. However most of his form is over 6f and he may be caught out for speed on this track as its a quick five. That point applies to quite a few of the field and if Stepper Point was to build on his run at Newmarket behind Sole Power then he would have an ew chance (16/1) on his previous run at the track although I wont make him a selection as it's a bit of a punt.

Thursday 9 May 2013

Yeeoow !!

In the Class 3 Handicap at Ascot on 7.05 Friday Yeeoow gets the chance to uphold the form of the Doncaster race last month from which Hamza,York Glory and Duke of Firenze have all won since.
He's drawn 1 which might be a negative as high numbers may be favoured, still the draw is not everything and advantages can change easily and that is also overcome by the fact that he is 8/1 and looks to have improvement to come against Class 3 opposition.

David O'Meara is going great guns as is his stable jockey Darren Tudhope and Dick Bos in the 6.55 at Ripon could be ready to strike. Foremerly trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam he won very easily at Windsor last summer and if he shows anything like that here he could be up to winning.

Up a bit, down a bit - 8th May

This week we kick start with the Listed Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Pavilion Stakes over 6f at Ascot on 1st May which was won by Richard Hannon's Ninjago by 1 1/2 lengths to Intibah with a further neck back to Hasopop in 3rd. The winner has been raised 10lb to 105, whilst the 2nd has been put up 11lb to 101 and the 3rd has remained on the same mark of 95. The winning time was fast and was 0.30 secs below standard and Hannon's other runner Tassel was an eyecatcher behind in 7th.

On Saturday 4th May at Goodwood Duke of Firenze won the Class 3 Handicap over 5f by a short head from Kyleakin Lass with 1 1/2 lengths back to Fair Value in third. The winner who has threatened to be better than he has shown has been raised 6lb to 97 and Fallon in his weekender column stated that he won easier than it looked and he looks capable of further progress. The second, a fair sort, has been raised 4lb to 96 whilst the third remains on the same mark of 90.

The Palace House Stakes was won by Sole Power and the BHB Handicapper summed the race up as follows on his blog page :

The most prestigious 5f race of the 2013 season thus far was the Group 3 Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes run at Newmarket on Saturday, writes Chris Nash.

There was a disputed lead and so the pace looked solid. The time of the race was under standard (this was the only race on the card to manage that) and there was no trouble in running. All in all there are reasons to take a positive view of the form and I would hope (and expect) that it will prove reliable over the coming months.

The race was won in tidy fashion by the Irish-trained Sole Power. Edward Lynam’s six-year-old thrives in a well-run 5f race on quick ground and, given his conditions, can usually be relied upon to put in a performance - he won the Nunthorpe (Group 1) in 2010 and last year was second in the Temple Stakes (Group 2) and third in the Kings Stand Stakes (Group 1).

Sole Power arrived with a rating of 113 and I have no reason to doubt that he ran his race again. Kingsgate Native finished a length behind him in second and has run to a figure of 110. This represents a recent best but he’s a dual Group 1 winner going back and was rated as high as 120 after the 2008 Golden Jubilee.

The last-time-out winners Tangerine Trees (pre-race 106) and Heeraat (pre-race 108) finished third and fourth. They were separated by a short-head and finished a length and a quarter behind Kingsgate Native. I have both running to 106 and their presence gives the form further substance. The next 5f pattern race is the Temple Stakes at Haydock on Saturday 25th May and plenty of these will likely renew rivalry there.

On the same afternoon Secretinthepark won the Class 2 Handicap over 6f by 1 1/2 lengths from Brazen with a further 1 1/4 lengths back to Purcell in third. The winner has been raised 7lb to 91, the second 3lb to 85 and the third remains on the same mark of 84.

Over at Thirsk Bedloe's Island, drawn 19, won the Class 4 Handicap over 5f in which 19 went to post, back in second was Angelito (13) and half a length further back in third was veteran Moorhouse Lad (18). The winner has been raised 4lb to 86, the second 3lb to 79 and the third 1lb to 84. Rothesay Chancer (7) did best of the lower drawn horses in 5th and remains on 74.

Sunday 5 May 2013

Sunday Post

After Sole Power winning yesterday he confirmed that it is better to follow your head than your heart as Heeraat would have been the latter for me.

On to today and the sprint at 3.10 looks in my mind to be between the placed horses at Doncaster on 13th April namely Hamza, Shropshire and Hitchens, the form of that race has been franked by Move In Time, Duke of Firenze and York Glory.

Hamza led them along at a good pace that day and only faltered in the final furlong and he will strip fitter today with Kevin Ryan beginning to show signs of return to form. Shropshire meanwhile has run a couple of decent races already and he came out best on speed figures at Doncaster but comes out worst on the weights today and it could be between Hitchens and Hamza. Not sure Hamza will last up the hill whereas Hitchens has his strongest part of the race at the finish and its another head versus heart decison for me and going to go with my head and Hitchens to prevail at 8/1 with Richard Hughes being a positive jockey booking.

The Palace House Stakes

The Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes - Newmarket
Going - Good to Firm
This years race sees 18 runners line up at the 5f start at 2.30pm and with the race having favoured low drawn runners over the last 4 years the omens look good for the likes of Heeraat, Sole Power and Doc Hay to all be in the mix.
The field has 3 potential front runners in the very fast Swan Song drawn 1, Bungleinthejungle drawn 2 and potentially smart Heeraat drawn 7 and that bolsters the chances of those drawn low as all the pace should be with them.
Sole Power loves to come off a fast pace on quick ground and he gets both of those tomorrow and this consistently good performer looks sure to go close having already performed with credit at Meydan earlier in the year. His trainer Edward Lynam said: "He's very fresh and well at the moment so we felt we wanted to get a run into him now. There are plenty of runners and there should be plenty of pace, hopefully. All going well, this will be a stepping stone to the Temple Stakes at Haydock later in the month and then hopefully Royal Ascot after that." - 1st 7/2
Heeraat recorded a decent time figure in what appeared to be effortless fashion at Newbury last time out and having only had 12 races to date looks open to further improvement with Paul Hanagan keeping the ride.
Angus Gold, racing manager for owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, said: "He's an improving horse going the right way and he has a great attitude. He's a smart sprint handicapper at the moment and we want to find out whether he can jump up a grade and be a possible contender for the King's Stand at Royal Ascot. I know William is a little bit concerned about the undulations of Newmarket, but as far as the ground goes I don't think that will worry him. He has a nice action and I'm sure he'll handle good ground without too many problems." - 4th
Doc Hay has his second run of the season after finishing 4th in the Woodlands Stakes at Naas and he should run well for his up and coming trainer David O'Meara and only the going may be the unknown factor for him as he has not won on Good to Firm. - 0
Pearl Secret won his first 4 races last season and looked a smart type for David Barron who has done so well with his sprinters over the years and Jamie Spencer will be looking to produce him late but like Doc Hay he will be stepping into the unknown on Good to Firm going. David Barron said "Its a step up from the race he was winning, he's done plenty of work, he's in good form and he looks well. Ground wise we know he goes on soft, you can't gaurentee he'll go on fast ground". - NR

History : The event is named after Palace House, a famous building in Newmarket on the site of a royal residence of King Charles II. The race was established in 1961, and the first running was won by Galivanter.
Draw Record last 5 years :
